Throughout the concert, Sammi was like an energizer bunny which bopped around and shuttled to-and-fro the stage to interact with exhilarated fans. She thrilled the audience with her strong vocals and discotheque medley of English retro hits like ‘I Will Survive’, ‘Can’t Take My Eyes Off You’, ‘Conga’, while shaking and grooving to the rhythmic beat of the music.

A one-of-a-kind stage performer, the svelte one sported a total of 9 outfits — from outrageous to glamourous, and leotards to sequined outfits — throughout the entire two-hour long concert. At one point while crooning to an old Chinese love ballad titled ‘Just Like Your Tenderness’ by the late Teresa Teng, tears were glistening in Sammi’s eyes as she shared, “Whenever I think of the topic of ‘love’, I’ll think of this song.”

Apart from guest performers like Singaporean jazz singer Tan Hanjin, and MC Jing, the highlight of Sammi’s Love-Mi concert was when she jived to a medley of her hit dance tracks like ‘Exclusive Song Test’ and ‘Everyone is a Superstar’. In that explosive segment, Sammi rocked the stage with her new lean and muscular physique, and drove the crowd into a wild frenzy with her showmanship and exuberant dance moves.

Unlike her other concerts, the Hong Kong artiste had a little surprise installed for local concertgoers when she came back for not only one, but two encores. Despite the name of Twins’ New and Best Selections package, the album is in essence a variety of songs every Twins fan is able to recite by heart. Yet even though so much effort has been invested into creating an impression that the album is Twins’ comeback, this is misleading and it is clear that the final product is merely a method to protect and guide Gillian Chung’s comeback debut EP.

During the era of Twins, it was as if Charlene Choi and Gillian Chung could be considered as separate individuals who from time to time must face internal conflict and separation among fans. Yet, Twins had more or less reached the appearance of unity on stage with occassional Twins and ocassional solo developments. However, just one unexpected event was enough to disrupt all plans, causing Charlene to advance forward solo as the Twins member who has all along been the stronger singer in Twins. Through the release of an album and an EP, Charlene Choi has already slowly advanced and established herself and has effectively transitioned from a duo to her present solo style.

However, it is evident that Gillian Chung’s position will more awkward and embarrassing than Ah Sa’s. Not only because of her previous scandal, but also because she must face an entire new transormation from her previous young girl image, enough to generate headaches among her entire music team.

Gillian Chung’s debut EP opens swiftly with two fast songs, inviting MC Jin to cooperate on “A Heart Too Many” and young EEG star William Chan to lead “What is the Trend.” However, apart from a mass of rhythms and beats, there is honestly no real pleasant selling point that is audible to the listener. As well, Zhou Yao Hui and Wyman Wong’s lyrics seem to be superficially filled in and written half-heartedly, evoking a feeling similar to going east and west with neither aim nor excitement. Next, the lyrics of “Living Abroad” by Keith Chan begin to move closer to Gillian Chung’s personal world, but her exaggerated pronuncation and thread-thin voice are prominent. This without a doubt magnifies her weaknesses in comparison to Ah Sa’s “Two Without One.” One can say that if Charlene Choi and Gillian Chung were merely considered as newcomers, Ah Sa is most definitely one level ahead.

“Starting Off From Tin Hau Station” is clearly a sequel to “Next Station Tin Hau,” but more clearly depicts EEG’s hopes for Gillian Chung. However, in comparison to her results in the music world following her comeback, they are merely figurative dreams in lyrics.

It is important to realize that as fans grow up, the present Gillian Chung must face the problem of her changing persona and image. If she is to walk the path of dance music, in that case she must change overnight, making it questionable whether all previous fans are accepting and take a liking to her stark new image. If she is to walk a path purely as a singer, realistically, her vocal ability will once again be a great problem. No matter how deep her songs may be in the future, her fans who grow and mature along with Gillian will slowly become tired of her obvious flaws in singing.

Losing the possibility of proceeding as a cute and young persona and image, achieving the goal as a Tin Hau for Gillian Chung will be of great dificulty.
